Wind Mitigation Inspections Made Easy

The official Atlantic Hurricane season runs from June to November, but occasionally storms form outside of those months. Since the inception of the Saffir-Simpson Scale for gauging the severity of hurricanes in 1851, 292 hurricanes have hit the U.S. It probably comes as no surprise that 41% of those hurricanes have made landfall on Florida due to its location directly between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Florida is the most hurricane-prone state in the country with double the total hurricanes as the second most prone state, Texas.

With a higher likelihood of property damage due to hurricane-force winds, insurance providers in Florida needed to add additional inspections to ensure the ongoing safety of Florida residents.

In 2008 the Florida Department of Financial Services certified the Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form OIR-B1-1802 (also known as a Wind Mitigation Form). With this form, they standardized the inspection process and requirements for wind mitigation inspections across the state of Florida.

So what's the problem?

The Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form kind of sucks.

Unfortunately, despite being a standard form used by every inspector, the reality is that many inspectors interpret the content of this form differently. As a result, the inspection process varies depending on who is completing it. Some inspectors are great and do a thorough job assessing the property and filling out the form with great attention to detail. Some don't even fully understand what the form is asking for and end up completing an inaccurate inspection.

It is imperative that inspectors complete these forms efficiently and accurately. If they don't, it could be the reason their customers end up spending outrageous amounts on wind insurance premiums or repairs for roofing components that don't actually need to be replaced.

The question then, is how can wind mitigation inspectors standardize their inspection process, clarify the contents of the form, and create a consistent, accurate, and efficient inspection process?

The Answer = Digital Mobile Forms.

Pen and paper forms are inefficient and fillable PDFs never work the way you want. The best way to complete important inspection reports is with a mobile form. Using any mobile device, you can input all the needed inspection data and then have your finalized PDF automatically generated and ready to be delivered. All without wasting time filling out paper forms, scanning them into a document reader, importing photos, or chasing down signatures.
